Designing gamification for geometry in elementary schools: insights from the designers

Abstract Popularly used in marketing and business, gamification has been gaining interest educational contexts for its potential to invigorate otherwise mundane or difficult processes. A gamified environment transfers motivational elements of games learning activities thereby engaging learners the task thus transforming dull classroom environments smart ones. This paper presents design process a intervention geometry at elementary level, based upon Huang Soman (Gamification education. Research report series: behavioural economics action, 29. Rothman School Management, University Toronto, 2013) model. We describe how insights from various sources helped us refine an previously one school. The focuses on gamifying tangram, unplugged resource, through incorporating game-based leader boards, points/stars challenge levels motivate young individually teams. Cognitive scaffolding undergird five bring affordances self social learner participation increasingly complex tasks. There are limited theoretical models guide researchers, especially ones that do not require digital resources. our recommendations support scaffolded student-centred environments.
